The Art of Leading Change
“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”
A workshop for managers leading teams through change
When you’re managing a team day to day, you need to be quite responsive. Thinking on your feet, keeping an eye on the metrics, making sure you’re delivering.
Leading through change asks something different of you, and it usually lands on top of all the stuff you were already busy with.
It’s longer term, and there can be a lot of uncertainty (sometimes for longer than anyone expected). Your team need you to be a place of safety, and to help them sit with the discomfort of not knowing…while the service still keeps running.
That’s a different skill set. And very often, it’s not one we work on until we absolutely have to.
When people disengage or push back, it’s easy to respond to what we can see. But it can be a real surprise what’s going on beneath the surface. The more you understand what people are likely to be experiencing, the better you can support them through it.
And even when you haven’t made the decision (and maybe don’t agree with it), you’ve got more responsibility than you might think. It’s rarely handed to you from the top, so it’s something you have to get on and do rather than wait to be told. Because your team need you, and you need to be their source of stability.
Who is the workshop for?
Managers leading a team through change now, and those who want the skills in place before they need them. And if you work in HR or OD and there’s change coming, it’s one to bring in for your managers.
A bit about me
Before I started Energise, I was a Head of OD at a new council formed through a big merger, and I’ve been on both sides of change. I’ve also been that employee not happy about how change happens in an organisation.
Leading teams through change is one of the things I’m called on for most, in the public and private sector.
I talked about supporting your team through change with Dr Hayley Lewis on her podcast, Manage with Confidence. You can listen to that here.
If the hardest part is the conversations, have a look at Mastering Courageous Conversations. I’ve also written about how to implement a decision you don’t agree with, here.
